Privacy Policy

Short version

Above does not need a user account. Your tours, summits, photos and notes live on your iPhone and, if you want, in your private iCloud.

Above is not a social network. There is no feed, no likes, no public profile, no advertising and no cross-app tracking.

Data in the app

When you record a tour, Above processes location points, elevation values, times and calculated tour data. Photos, notes, waypoints and summits are processed only when you use or save them.

This data stays on your device. You can delete it in the app or remove it from the device by deleting the app.

Location, photos and permissions

Above uses your location only if you have granted permission, for example to record a tour, show you on the map or check warnings along your route. If you start a recording and grant the relevant permission, location processing may also continue in the background.

Above accesses photos only when you select them or grant permission. Photos are used to attach them to tours, summits or notes.

You can revoke permissions at any time in iOS Settings. If you do not grant or later revoke a permission required for a feature, that feature may not work or may be limited.

iCloud sync

If you use iCloud, Above can sync your data through your private iCloud across your devices. iCloud sync is provided by Apple and tied to your Apple account.

We do not operate our own user account or sync server for your tours, photos, notes and summits.

Maps, weather warnings and external requests

For maps, search results, points of interest, elevation or terrain data and weather warnings, Above may request external map, data and weather services. Technically required data such as map area, coordinates, time, IP address and device request may be transmitted to the relevant service.

If you use tour discovery, Above may request tour suggestions and tour reports from hikr.org. Search terms, map areas or coordinates may be transmitted to hikr.org for this purpose.

For weather warnings and weather data, Above currently uses Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) for Germany, GeoSphere Austria for Austria and Apple WeatherKit for global weather data and warnings where available.

Above does not add its own user account, advertising ID or public profile to these requests. Offline maps are prepared for the relevant tour and stored on your device.

Export and sharing

You can export tours as GPX, individually or as an archive. When you share a tour as an image, you decide where to send that image.

Legal bases

Depending on the feature, processing is based on Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where it is necessary to provide app features you use, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR where you grant an optional permission, and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR for secure operation, error analysis and privacy-friendly website statistics.

Website

hikeabove.com is delivered as a static website through Cloudflare Pages. When you visit the website, the hosting provider processes technically necessary access data so the site can be delivered and protected.

For simple, privacy-friendly visitor statistics, we use GoatCounter. It shows aggregated values such as page views, referrer, browser, system, language, screen width and approximate origin. GoatCounter does not set cookies, does not store IP addresses and does not create user profiles.

Retention and your rights

App data stays on your device or in your iCloud until you delete it in Above, in iCloud or by removing the app. Technical website data is processed only as long as required for delivery, security and privacy-friendly statistics.

Subject to the GDPR, you have rights to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. Where processing is based on your consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time with effect for the future. You may also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

We may update this Privacy Policy if features, services or legal requirements change. The date above shows the current version.
