Above

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Above cost?
The tour archive and summit book are always free to use. You can test hike recording, including offline use of the topographic maps, for three tours. After that, a one-time purchase of €14.99 unlocks it permanently. There is no subscription.
Which devices and iOS versions are supported?
Above is made for iPhone and requires iOS 18 or later.
Which languages does Above support?
Above is available in German and English.
Which regions does Above cover?
The topographic map uses worldwide OpenStreetMap data prepared by Above for hiking. Map detail, POIs, trail difficulty and official warning coverage depend on what is available for the region.
Does the map work offline?
Yes. The map for each tour is saved offline automatically (typically 15 to 40 MB per tour), so your tour plays back fully even without a signal.
What happens if Above closes during a hike?
If Above is interrupted, killed by the system or accidentally closed, the started tour is restored when you reopen the app. If you come back shortly after, recording continues. After a longer interruption, Above asks whether you want to continue or save the tour.
Can I bring my tours over from Komoot and other apps?
Yes. Above imports GPX files from Komoot, Bergfex, Outdooractive and any app that exports GPX. When importing an archive, you can choose whether the files are imported as completed tours or planned tours. Importing a whole archive never uses up your three free recording tests.
Can I use tours recorded with Above in other apps?
Yes. You can export tours recorded with Above as GPX and use them in other apps or share them there. Above is not your public profile; it is just for you on your device. You can take your data out of Above at any time.
Can Above help me get to the start?
Yes. For planned tours, Above can hand the start point to Maps or another navigation app so you can get there first and then start the hike.
What happens if I delete the app or lose my iPhone?
Your tours and summits sync through your own private iCloud, so they come back when you reinstall or set up a new device.
Does Above tell me which way to go?
No. Above does not automatically route hikes. It records where you go, shows you a detailed map, and warns you about weather and wrong turns.
How do the weather warnings work?
Above checks your route and current area against official severe-weather warnings from DWD, GeoSphere Austria and Apple WeatherKit where available. It can warn you before the start and on the trail when a relevant warning overlaps your tour. This needs reception to fetch fresh warnings and is not a full weather forecast or radar.
What is planned next?
Planned features include an in-app route-planning mode, a weather forecast to help choose the best day for a tour, and rain radar. They are not part of the current feature set, may later be offered as separate purchases and are not promised for a specific date.
